Shih Tzu Grooming: Topknots, Face Trims and Keeping the Eyes Clear

Shih Tzu coats grow continuously and densely, and the face is flat. Those two facts drive everything — the cut you choose, the parts that mat, and the daily routine that keeps the dog comfortable between appointments.

The face is a grooming problem, not just a look

A brachycephalic muzzle puts the eyes forward and prominent, with hair growing directly above and around them. Left long, that hair sweeps the eye surface with every blink. Shih Tzus are already prone to corneal irritation because of how exposed the eye sits; hair in it is a genuine welfare issue rather than an aesthetic one.

Two solutions, and they are both fine. Trim the face short and rounded — the "puppy face" — so nothing reaches the eye. Or grow the head hair long and tie it up in a topknot. What does not work is long head hair left loose.

The other flat-face job is the nose fold. It stays damp, and damp skin folds get sore. Wipe and dry it as part of the same routine as the eyes.

Where the coat mats

Shih Tzu coat is dense enough that mats form under an intact-looking surface. In rough order of how often we find them:

  • Behind the ears — the ear leather is heavy and rubs constantly. This is the number one spot in the breed.
  • The armpits and the chest under a harness.
  • The sanitary area and the back of the legs.
  • The ear canal fringe itself, which also traps moisture — a factor in how often the breed gets ear infections.

Comb, do not brush. A slicker over the top of a Shih Tzu coat tells you almost nothing about what is happening at the skin.

Choosing a length

The puppy cut — an inch or so all over, face rounded — is what most Shih Tzus here wear, and it is the honest recommendation for a pet dog. It holds six weeks and survives an imperfect brushing routine.

The teddy bear is the same idea with more length left on the legs and a fuller face. Prettier, and about twice the brushing.

The full floor-length coat is a show commitment: daily combing plus wrapping. Beautiful, and not a realistic pet coat for most households.

One length worth asking for regardless of style: short between the paw pads. Shih Tzus grow hair there thickly, and it turns into a slippery mat that spreads the toes and makes hard floors treacherous for a dog with short legs.

Booking

A Shih Tzu groom is The Royal Treatment: bath, blow-out, fifteen minutes of brushing, ear cleaning, nails and the full haircut, from $65 for a small dog. Four to six weeks. Say at drop-off whether you want the face rounded short or left long for a topknot — it is the single decision that most changes how the dog looks walking out.
